What usually follows an extraordinary act of kindness?

I’m glad you asked....

Extraordinary acts of gratitude.

Gratitude is a skill that can be taught, learned, cultivated and practiced as second nature. David Thomas, President of Moorehouse College, called Robert F. Jones’ benevolent act “a gift of liberation” Mr. Jones has freed these 396 students of future debt that would have followed them well into their professional lives.

The Gift of liberation

This interview brought me to a level of excitement and I was challenged to recall a great liberating act that transformed my life. My salvation and fellowship with God as his child. As a Pastor I am challenged to share my faith while practicing to stay grounded with gratitude for what Christ has done for me.

I was in spiritual debt, bankrupt and unable to climb out of mental darkness because of my separation from God.  This didn’t mean that I could not function with daily pursuits. This debt didn’t disable me from great accomplishments or maintaining relationships. It was just looming as a tremendous burden as one that could only be repaid through sacrifice.

Christ did for me in the Spirit, a great act of kindness, what Robert F. Jones did for 396 Moorehouse students in the natural this week. He granted me a lifetime “gift of liberation”.

I’m sorry!

I’m not always practicing gratitude...

I have taken for granted just what was done and at times I get beat down by life’s body blows, I find it hard to embrace this act with a grateful heart because I get so loaded with the need to be successful as a husband, father, pastor, entrepreneur and at times I find myself angry, bitter and even disgruntled.

Creating a Process

Don Lemon asked David Thomas at the 1.34 mark during the interview, “do you have any idea how this will be done?”. David’s response got me excited, he replies “when your doing something that has never been done before you have to create a process”.

This held true before and continues to hold true today.

The true question concerning the process is this, can you be grateful once you are years away from receiving the gift?

Will this 2019 class find something negative to grip their minds around and have to be reminded of just how great this amazing act of generosity was just as I had to be concerning my faith and the greatest liberating act I have ever experienced in my life? Will hardship, trials and tribulations that lie in wait for them choke out the excitement and replaced gratefulness with bitterness and excuses?

As I write this morning I am reminded of many people I know who share my faith but are always complaining, setting traps for others and unwelcoming to new people as they are suspect of introducing new people to experience the same liberation we share in common.

Where did we loose our gratitude?

My prayer is that this story inspires you to become excited again about your faith. That you be inspired to tell strangers of your great Spiritual liberation as we have been freed from Spiritual bankruptcy and yet the Scriptures remind us that Christ “hath blessed us with all spiritual blessings in heavenly places in Christ:” Ephesians 1:3

No there won’t be CNN interviews waiting for you, however, with a conscious effort to practice gratitude, you will definitely feel better everyday.

Faith that works

We are living in a time where people like to do a lot of talking without any follow up. We celebrate people for doing the least amounts of charity because it is rare that we will consider the needs of others.

Faith Without Works Is Dead 14 What does it profit, my brethren, if someone says he has faith but does not have works? Can faith save him? 15 If a brother or sister is naked and destitute of daily food, 16 and one of you says to them, “Depart in peace, be warmed and filled,” but you do not give them the things which are needed for the body, what does it profit? 17 Thus also faith by itself, if it does not have works, is dead.

However, the Scriptures are clear that we are not to send others away in their times of need and destitution. Yet, we feel as if we need to be celebrated when we do that which is required of us.

This morning I celebrate Billionaire tech investor Robert F. Smith — the founder and chief executive of Vista Equity Partners. Smith will pay off the student loans of the entire 2019 graduating class of Moorehouse students. He blessed these 400 students with a head start, only requesting that they do not forget this blessing and pay it forward.

As a believer in Christ and a preacher, I give glory and honor to God for men like this, I never heard of Robert F. Smith until yesterday, yet I’m grateful to be Introduced to him this way, he was willing to be an example of what it means to share with others. As the Scriptures have taught me that Christ gave us everything that we may inherit all things, yet many believers are so selfish and judgmental as it relates to others outside of our church members, families and friends.

HE DID THIS FOR STRANGERS...

We forget that we were Spiritually empty and bankrupt, yet God has allowed us to tap into His limitless account as joint heirs with Christ. Now we have access to God through prayer and the ability to think on a Spiritual level. I don’t know if Mr. Smith is a follower of Christ or not, however, I do know that these types of acts are not happening everyday on this level causing it reported and recognized as mainstream news.
